Ancient Egyptians needed to calculate the size of farmland after the Nile flooded, so they invented a system of unit squares—each one nagar or ten by ten cubits. Fast forward to 3rd-century BC Greece, and Archimedes was using the “method of exhaustion” (an early version of limits) to find areas of circles by inscribing and circumscribing polygons. They might not have had calculators, but their creative geometry laid the groundwork for our modern formulas.

That means if you double the side length of a square, the perimeter doubles but the area quadruples. Treating area like a simple linear measurement can lead to big mistakes—especially in construction or land planning!
