In the mid-1800s, Florence Nightingale didn’t just save lives at the front lines—she sketched colourful diagrams to convince officials that sanitary hospitals cut death rates dramatically. Her “coxcomb charts” (an early form of the pie-and-polar area diagram) highlighted the biggest killers in military hospitals and sparked major health reforms. Around the same time, physician John Snow plotted cholera cases on a London map, proving the disease spread through water. These pioneers showed that visualising data could change minds and policies.

It’s easy to think data analysis is all about fancy formulas or powerful software. In reality, the most important skill is asking the right questions: What problem are you solving? What could skew your numbers? And remember—correlation (two things happening together) doesn’t always mean causation (one thing causing the other). Good data detectives always look for context before jumping to conclusions.
